ACT 2025 is delighted to work with our programme partner Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF) to celebrate artistic collaborations between Asia and Europe.
Conceived as a focus on Asia-Europe connections, the Asia-Europe Cultural Festival (AECFest) is a multidisciplinary public art festival that travels annually between Asia and Europe to involve an ever-widening network of partners and connection with the local communities of each host city/country. For its seventh edition, in 2025, the Festival will be presented for the first time in Shanghai as a ‘festival within a festival’ on the occasion of ACT16.
Presented by the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF) since 2018, the Festival for the past six years has witnessed the rich tapestry of cultural exchange between Asia and Europe, promoting artistic collaborations and opening connections between two continents known for their diversity and creativity.
This year's programme will allow Italian audiences to enjoy events ranging from dance, theatre, multidisciplinary art and film by artists from China, France, Germany, Indonesia, Italy, and Spain.
The shared programme opens on 3 September with That’s All Folks! by FRITZ Company (Italy), a poetic exploration of identity and the unknown through an international collaboration. On 6–7 September, French choreographer Jérôme Bel joins Chinese artist Xiao Ke in a minimalist duet reflecting on art, politics, and cross-cultural dialogue. The following weekend, Foe of an Arrow Wound by Beijing’s Paper Tiger Theatre delves into Chinese-European history and cultural memory through a multimedia production inspired by an 18th-century scroll. Concluding the programme from 7–9 October, Ocean Cage by Tianzhuo Chen and Siko Setyanto transforms the Drama Salon into an immersive ritual exploring ecology, tradition, and perception.
As a special side event, the Cervantes Institute in Shanghai will host a film screening on 10 September of China 354, a documentary-style project by Spanish filmmaker Luis Castro. Comprising 354 one-minute video fragments filmed across China in 2019, the work offers an intimate, unfiltered portrait of contemporary Chinese life, exploring themes of identity, tradition, family, and the urban-rural divide.
In a world where borders continue to exist despite technological advances, the Festival stands as a beacon of artistic unity, transcending geographical and language barriers to bring Asia and Europe closer together.
The Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF) is a non-profit intergovernmental organisation established in 1997 by 51 countries from Asia and Europe, ASEAN and the EU, to promote dialogue between the two regions. ASEF is based in Singapore and develops intellectual, cultural and people-to-people exchange programmes.
ASEF receives financial support from the People’s Republic of China.
